    Kegel 9-pin bowling

Kegel is the original bowling game that is very widespread in Europe and has been around much longer as Tenpin.  We have adopted the German name for the game as Germany is the hot-spot and Kegel is played in virtually every small town.  It is played like all bowling games by rolling a ball down a lane or alley with the aim to knock over as many pins as possible.

Tenpin bowling is known to virtually the entire population and most people will have played at least once. This makes Tenpin not only a known commodity but a destination activity.

Bowling is enjoying ever greater popularity. However, the floor space and administration required for a classical bowling alley often pose a problem for proprietors of small-scale recreational venues.

We at Kegel Sport can help, assist and advice with the design of you new venue.

All of our bowling lane constructions start off with the sub-structure, a bearers and joist structure that is below the lane surface. A well designed sub-structure is vitally important as this is the base that ensures that the laminated lane surface is perfectly level. The bearers and joists lift the bowling surface from the original floor, thereby ensuring a cushioning effect that eliminates excessive noise when the ball is dropped onto the lane.

Furthermore, it allows for an underground ball return as sometimes required in Tenpin bowling and is high enough to create the depth needed for the ball pit.

The pinsetters are mounted onto a front and back frame that is totally free standing and not attached to the pindeck or lane surface, making sure that there is no vibration transmitted to the pinsetter from the ball hitting the pins.

Our specially developed laminated lane surface is mounted onto the joists, with a layer of MDF or particle board in between and the gutters and automatic bumpers are fitted. The final precision levelling is now done.

The masking wall is erected in front of the pinsetters with the purpose of hiding the machinery, so only the pins can be seen. Above each lane is a door for easy access to the pindeck and also for easy access for the cleaning of the lanes.

The electronic control is mounted behind the masking wall; the ball return system is fitted and the bowlers console attached and connected.

    Dear Heinz,

As we approach our first year of trading with Island Bowling, I would again like to take the opportunity to thank Kegel Sports for your ongoing support of our centre.

We were impressed with your professional installation last year, and now with the centre operating we can advise that Kegel 9-pin is continuing to grow its appeal with our guests and conference market.

The interactive variety of games has appeal to a wide demographic of our market with families and couples, and confirms our decision to choose Kegel over Tenpin and other indoor activity offers as the correct choice.

We continue to market the activity to conference groups who are using the facility as a pre and post dinner activity. The appeal here is bringing groups together lane vs lane, team vs team, meeting objetives of conferencing party organisers who want their people mixing and forming relationships within their networks.

As a wet weather option we simply can't keep up with the demand.

Congratulations to Kegel Sport, and we wish you continued success of what we believe is an exiting new interactive product in Australian activity offers.

    Yours sincerely,

The first question I am often asked is "Is 9 Pin Bowling simply 10 Pin Bowling with a pin missing?" To this I always reply that no, each are very different sports despite the fact that in both you still bowl underarm with a bowling ball with the aim being to knock pins over. So fundamentally they remain very similar but a look beneath the surface brings a number of obvious differences.

The most obvious is the fact that in Kegel 9 Pin Bowling, a smaller lighter bowling ball is used and you have the option of playing a variety of different bowling games as compared to the one game in 10 Pin Bowling. What this means to the family group who have come in for a social game is that Kegel offers a number of novelty based bowling games which have been purely designed to bring a smile to the faces of all involved which is a highly important commodity as the satisfaction of mum and dad seeing the kids enjoying themselves is paramount in the quest for return customers. These games also allow for a greater opportunity for little Timmy or Chloe to in fact beat mum, dad or big brother or sister.

Similarly there are a number of skill based games which have been designed to test the ability of the competitive bowler in all facets of their game. The advantage in this is seen during competition or league play in that a number of different games are played to also not only test the bowler but also hold their interest to avoid the monotony of playing the same game over and over again.

Likewise the variety of games also aid in the entertainment of guests over a longer period of time as is often seen in function bookings.

When you delve deeper there are also considerable advantages for the proprietor. Having worked on 10 Pin machinery for 16 years I was astounded by the simplicity of the 9 Pin Bowling machines. No moving parts in the pit area, no bulky and expensive gears for the running of the tables or sweeps, 1 set of pins only required which offer a near lifetime service span, speed of resetting, no belts, bearings, kicker assemblies in the ball elevator area, no oil on the lanes and hence no oil being tracked through the machinery or being walked dangerously back onto the approaches, no need for expensive lane oilers or washers, etc. etc.

There is also no need for special bowling shoes which can be stolen as the bowlers play in their own footwear while the use of only 2 different sized bowling balls negates the requirement of having many 6,8,10,12,14,15,16lb bowling balls in stock. The lack of leather sooled bowling shoes also has the added advantage in wet conditions of ease of mind for the proprietor as you no longer need to keep an eye on smokers venturing outside in wet weather for a cigarette break. The danger with this was always that upon return with wet soles they would be guaranteed to stick on the approach and regularly fall over risking injury and insurance claims.

I can see no reason why the sport of Kegel 9 Pin Bowling cannot have a lucrative existence here in Australia as it does overseas in the European countries."

    About us

    Our Company

Kegel Sport Pty Ltd is a privately owned company and we are based in Coffs Harbour, NSW, Australia. The company exclusively concentrates only on the manufacture and installation of bowling equipment, be it 9-pin or Tenpin. We also have developed our own games software that features many games.

Kegel Sport imported the first fully automatic Kegel equipment into Australia in 2003 and built a small 2 lane venue near Coffs Harbour on the North Coast of New South Wales. After realising the acceptance of the new bowling game by the public, a larger 12 lane centre was established in 2007 in a prominent position in Coffs Harbour. This was followed up by a 4 lane centre in Melbourne and a 7 lane centre at Hamilton Island on the Great Barrier Reef in Queensland.
